Hawaii can now enjoy the great outdoors without a face mask

We can take off our masks outside!

It’s been a long time coming, even after the CDC gave the green light.  Some states chose to keep restrictions in place, and Hawaii was one of them.  But the other day Governor Ige removed the mask mandate when outdoors, even for unvaccinated people!  Some will choose to continue wearing them, and it’s not a bad idea, considering that there is still a good chance of Covid being “in the air”.  At least here on Maui we are blessed with the trade winds and lots of sunshine, which helps to dilute any lingering virus.

Along with this proclamation, starting June 1 we can now hold ocean sporting events such as surf contests, paddling competitions, and swim events.  Just in time for all the local kids to get back out there and have some fun at the summer keiki surf competitions.

But keep those masks handy because you still need them in shops and other places, including crowded outdoor settings.
