Maui wild fires – one year after August 8 2023
What has changed in this year since the fires devastated parts of Maui, including most of Lahaina? We’ve come a long way for sure, but there’s still a lot of work to do.
Some recent updates from Lahaina that we’ve heard on the news:
- Most of the residential lots have been scraped, cleared and covered with fresh gravel to prevent erosion. Building permits are issued and rebuilding has begun. A handful of homes are already under construction.
- The commercial properties are being handled next and some of them are already cleared.
- Traffic is being allowed on the old highway, to ease the congestion on the bypass.
- Public water in the whole area is now safe to drink.
- A couple of temporary housing projects above town are coming along nicely.
- The County is still undecided about what to do in the oceanfront commercial area.

The beaches are still open for everyone
