Celestial Cinema – an outdoor movie night in Wailea Maui
The Maui Film Festival in Wailea just celebrated 20 years of bringing new and exciting films to Maui, in a bold creative way. June 12-16 showcased another great collection of original and award winning works.
One of the favorite venues is the Celestial Cinema which is an outdoor BIG SCREEN on the grounds of the Wailea Golf Club. Guests can bring a beach chair and settle in for a whole night of entertainment, with a presentation, 2 feature films and a number of shorts.
If you ever get a chance to attend a double feature film screening here on the fairway, under the stars, it’s a memorable event. For those who don’t want to hassle with parking, just hop on a bus from the event parking lot and leave the driving to someone else. Otherwise, expect to pay $20 if you park up at Mulligans.
Sunday June 16 – Gates opened at 6:30 and ticket holders were lined up and ready to find themselves a little plot of ground to sit and relax until show time. Food and refreshments were for sale, and some vendors were set up as well, throughout the evening. Outside food and drink is discouraged. It’s a fun and friendly time, with neighbors bumping into each other and stories being shared as the anticipation mounts.
On the final evening this year, the rising full moon adorned the sky as presentations were made and the films were introduced. The balmy south shore of Maui was a perfect location for some vibrant films about Maui and Maui water sports people and lifestyle. The highlight list on Sunday June 16:
- Olivia Wilde in person – Lights! Camera! Passion! Award
- Paige – Short film about Paige Alms, big wave women’s world surfing champion
- This Excellent Life – A Mike Waltze Film about the evolution of extreme ocean sports
- Echo in the Canyon – A musical documentary about the California sound
Watching the film about Paige was a real eye opener about this surfing super star, and I’m so proud to be her auntie! The Mike Waltz film brought back a lot of memories of Maui life in the 80’s when so many innovations were happening in water sports, and it was part of our lives. After many hours we bailed out before the final feature, but it looked like another fun trip down memory lane.
I totally recommend going to the Celestial Cinema in Wailea Maui!
When the sun goes down, the show begins
This beautiful ocean view scenery sets the tone for the evening, in classy Wailea Maui. A peaceful golf course, away from any homes or lights, offers the perfect location and climate to enjoy the open air theater. As we all gather and settle into our spaces, the air cools and the excitement grows. Grab a meal or a drink, find your spot and prepare for a fun-filled night of diverse big screen entertainment that can only be found on Maui.
Are you ready? Let the show begin!
This whole event is powered by the sun, thanks to Rising Sun Solar.
