Sea levels are rising.
Recent weather events are highlighting the effects of the rising oceans and the damage to the sensitive shorelines of Maui. Storm surges, high tides, and other natural cycles seem to be getting more extreme every year. There’s only so much that can be done to slow the encroachment, and sooner or later many buildings will have to adapt. A managed retreat will be a good option for many places.
Just the other day, a sidewalk and some coconut trees sank into the ocean off Kaanapali. It’s happening now and it will continue to happen. Our shoreline is dynamic, and it doesn’t bode well for many of the condos and homes built too close to the water.
This interactive mapping tool will help property owners to get an idea of what the future holds in regard to the ocean level rising here in Hawaii. Whether you’re a buyer or a seller, it’s important to know what the future might look like.
