Seafood City Supermarket
It’s our first Seafood City on Maui and it comes as a surprise to many of us, being located in the Maui Marketplace Shopping Center which has been sort of like a ghost town recently. This chain of Filipino grocery stores has expanded throughout North America, with over 30 stores in the US and Canada.
As usual, the grand opening met with big crowds of eager shoppers on August 22nd. Maui always welcomes a new shop or restaurant with pent up demand for something different. We wandered in, about a week later, and they were still very busy, with people lining up for the hot food within at Grill City. No time for that now, it can wait until the crowds cool off.
We were impressed with the large selection of just about everything, but especially real food items like fresh produce, bakery, meat and poultry, and of course fish and seafood. Maybe the dairy section is smaller than expected, but they cover the basics. You can find a lot of snack foods, tropical beverages, housewares, and unusual Filipino foods. Some things were very alien to us, but looked interesting and worth exploring.
Everyone was in a festive mood, and the staff were very friendly. The aisles are wide and there’s lots of check-out counters. The Grill City section features plenty of seating for groups and many choices of hot foods. We’ll be going back for sure, to do some shopping and eating!
